Technology to Make Green Products Has Exploded
With the increased spotlight on fossil fuels and reduced dependence on them; more and more companies are looking for “Green” products. Products have been available for years with the introduction of synthetic motor oils and have evolved to include synthetic hydraulic oils and greases along with other heavy duty lubricants for the manufacturing markets.
Synthetic products themselves may not always be the best option or the most effective green product especially when there is a need for physical lubrication. Thanks to increased focus, research, and government incentives; the technology to make green products has exploded. New technology to make products from renewable resources has made these products more affordable and better than ever. These products contain no petroleum products, no volatile organic compounds (VOC), are biodegradable, use products from sunflower, corn, soybean, canola and coconuts. This is a step up over the older synthetic products that could still have some oil derived raw materials.
The new botanical products for industry and metal processing include heavy duty stamping and drawing and heavy duty machining and grinding. There are also several exceptional products using vegetable oils to provide physical lubrication when that is needed. Some other advantages of these products include:
- Excellent corrosion protection
- Easy to clean off parts
- Multi-metal compatible
- Smoke and oil eliminated
- No hazardous ingredients
- Safer and operator friendly
- Eliminate chlorinated paraffin’s
- Easy weld ability
For the hydraulic oils several extra benefits make synthetic oils a “green” choice. As with synthetic motor oils these also cost more than the conventional oils but have a great upside. Several synthetic oils are available that are zinc free, have high viscosity indexes, contain ashless additive packages and provide energy savings of 8-12%. That energy reduction can significantly reduce electricity needs and contribute to a greener country. There are also biodegradable options that could become requirements in off road equipment.
