ITT Exelis wins contract for F/A-18 electronic warfare system software upgrade

ITT Exelis (NYSE: XLS) has been awarded a $19.6 million contract for software enhancements to the F/A-18 Integrated Defensive Electronic Countermeasures (IDECM) ALQ-214 Common On-board Jammer (OBJ).

“Since the F/A-18 remains the Navy's front line strike fighter, its effective protection against any threat is critical”

The software upgrade will be incorporated into the IDECM ALQ-214(v)4/5 Common OBJ systems, that are installed on U.S. Navy F/A-18C/D/E/F aircraft. This upgrade will enable faster recognition and response times, and introduce the new Digital RF Memory based jamming techniques. This software upgrade will ensure that IDECM Common OBJ equipped aircraft can perform and survive their missions in the face of current and projected threats.

“Since the F/A-18 remains the Navy's front line strike fighter, its effective protection against any threat is critical,” said Rich Sorelle, acting president of Exelis Electronic Systems division. “The Exelis team will continue innovating to ensure our fighting forces always have the advantage in conflict.”

Under the contract, awarded by the Naval Air Systems Command based in Patuxent River, Md., more than 230 Navy aircraft currently flying with the system will receive the new software beginning in 2015.

“Our systems were designed for a long life in a changing environment,” Sorelle said. “These software upgrades provide a cost-effective means to ensure our customer has the most advanced countermeasures system in the world.”

The upgrade will be performed by the Exelis Electronic Systems division in Clifton, N.J.
