(Marietta, Ohio) – Plastics manufacturer Americas Styrenics will shut down six of its ten production lines here and permanently eliminate 63 positions. The layoffs will start March 7, according to a notice filed with the state of Ohio.
At the Marietta plant, the company makes polystyrene, a resin they sell for use in a wide range of electronics, toys, disposable plates and flatware, medical equipment, and appliance applications. Both salaried and union positions will be affected by the layoffs. Union employees are represented by United Steelworkers Local 14200-01.
Located on State Route 7 south of the city of Marietta, the plant has been in operation since 1955, according to the company's website. The facility was purchased by Americas Styrenics in May 2008. A research and technology center supporting the polystyrene product line is located adjacent to the production facility. This site also includes a pilot plant, a technical laboratory and fabrication area.
Americas Styrenics is a leading integrated producer of polystyrene and styrene monomer, offering solutions and services in a variety of markets throughout the Americas. It is a joint venture equally owned by The Dow Chemical Company and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP. For more information about the company visit http://www.amstyrenics.com/Pages/default.aspx
