(Burns Harbor, Indiana) – A round of layoffs at steelmaker ArcelorMittal’s facility here won’t be as bad as first reported because a deal struck with the United Steelworkers union will “substantially alleviate” the number of job reductions, a company spokesperson said.
Recently, ArcelorMittal announced production cuts at Burns Harbor would lead to more than 2,400 layoffs. The move was part of a 35 percent temporary global output reduction the company announced with its third quarter earnings on November 5th.
Company officials did not say how many fewer layoffs they expect to occur now, but several news reports say the deal will save at least hundreds of jobs.
“ArcelorMittal thanks its Burns Harbor employees and our partners at the USW for their efforts during this challenging period,” the company said in a statement.
The layoffs are slated to take place in the last half of January.
ArcelorMittal currently has about 4,000 employees at the site. For more information on the company visit http://www.arcelormittal.com/
