(Simpsonville, Kentucky) – Leggett & Platt (NYSE: LEG) will close its manufacturing plant here, putting 240 out of work. The company, which produces furniture mechanisms for recliners and rockers at the Simpsonville plant, announced in October it would only be laying off 86 of those workers.
“Regrettably, the company has now decided to close the facility in mid-January 2009,” said Michael Altman, senior relations representative for Leggett & Platt in a letter to the state. The original 86 layoffs will still take place in mid-December.
Missouri-based Leggett & Platt bills itself as a diversified manufacturer that produces a broad variety of engineered components for residential and commercial furnishings, industrial materials and specialized products. In previous interviews, company officials said the cuts are a result of a drop in demand which has led to excess manufacturing capacity.
