(Burns Harbor, Indiana) – Production cuts will lead to more than 2,400 layoffs at steelmaker ArcelorMittal’s facility here. The move comes as part of a 35 percent temporary global output reduction the company announced with its third quarter earnings on November 5th.
In a statement, ArcelorMittal said it has notified the United SteelWorkers union about the potential for the indefinite layoff of 2,444 employees at the facility beginning the second half of January 2009.
“Potential workforce reductions are a direct result of the extraordinary economic environment we are facing and the company hopes to return workers to their jobs as market conditions warrant,” the statement read. ArcelorMittal currently has about 4,000 employees at the site. For more information on the company visit http://www.arcelormittal.com/
