FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Steve Beshear and Economic Development Cabinet Secretary John Hindman has announced Pliant Corporation, a producer of value-added film and flexible packaging products for personal care, medical, food, industrial and agricultural markets, will invest $1.9 million to expand its Danville manufacturing facility, creating approximately 60 new jobs in the community with an average hourly wage of $20.87 exclusive of benefits.

“The expansion of Kentucky’s existing businesses is a vital component to boosting our state’s economy,” said Gov. Beshear. “Kentucky is honored to have Pliant Corporation choose Danville for this fantastic investment and welcomes the dozens of additional employment opportunities it represents. We look forward to a continued partnership with Pliant for years to come.”

Currently the 630,000 square-foot Danville complex manufactures polyethylene plastic film packaging for commercial and medical use and employs 291 people. The expansion will consolidate production lines from four other facilities outside of Kentucky into the Danville operations. The project will include upgrading and installation of plastic extrusion lines for packaging medical products, such as IV over wrap and syringe pouches.

Harold Bevis, president and CEO of Pliant Corporation stated, “Pliant is a leader in its core markets and continues to invest to accomplish that goal. Each of our plants has a special mission in that regard and the Danville, Kentucky plant is taking on a larger role with this new investment. Pliant is appreciative that Kentucky stepped forward and helped make this long-term decision with us. The support from Kentucky played a large role in our expansion decisions. Specifically, our medical packaging business is growing nicely and requires the next round of investment. We are expanding Danville operations and broadening its product portfolio. This team has proven itself as a cost effective innovator in the industry, and this is a great place to headquarter our future growth in medical packaging.”

“A key component of this expansion is a state-of-the-art, environmentally controlled, manufacturing operation for medical device and operating room supply packaging. This brand-new Medical Center of Excellence will consolidate Pliant Corporation’s technologies into one location and support the growing need for high performance and low cost packaging solutions for the medical industry. As customer trends advance, this facility will be positioned for future expansion and investment into demanding clean room applications. We are honored to play a part in growing Danville’s community and this investment will enable Danville to become a customer showcase for our medical packaging technologies,” added Bevis.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) preliminarily approved Pliant Corporation for tax benefits up to $1,464,000 under the Kentucky Rural Economic Development Act, an incentive program designed to increase manufacturing employment in the state.

Additionally, the company received approval from KEDFA for up to $36,000 in benefits under the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act, which allows approved companies to recoup Kentucky sales and use tax on the cost of construction materials, building fixtures and equipment.

“Pliant’s reinvestment of capital in our community and creation of new jobs through this expansion is confirmation that productivity and profitability of the existing business environment is better here in Danville/Boyle County, Kentucky,” said Jody Lassiter, president and CEO, Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership.

The Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development is the primary state agency in Kentucky responsible for creating new jobs and new investment in the state. New business investment in Kentucky in 2007 totaled over $2.3 billion with the creation of over 13,400 new jobs.
